Golf Champ Lived and Played Golf at this Psychiatric Hospital
Johnny McDermott, who at age of 19 in 1911 won the first U.S. Open and still holds the record for its youngest winner, was certified by the state as a ʺlunaticʺ and committed to this hospital on 6/23/16, at the age of 24. According to a great article at http://www.foxsportssouth.com/fox-sports-networks/story/Youngest-US-Open-champs-health-problems-?blockID=909587&feedID=3703, the institution's grounds crew, in 1922, ʺbuilt a makeshift six-hole golf course with crisscrossing fairways and barely-mowed greens,ʺ measuring 1,232 yards, for him to play on.
