Hart Island, a Potter's Field in Long Island Sound

Hart Island, a Potter's Field in Long Island Sound

New York City has a potter's field here in which close to 1,000,000 people have been buried, at the rate of about 1,500 a day. The island has an interesting history in addition to that of burial ground. See On the Island of the Dead, by Corey Kilgannon, in today's New York Times, at pp. Metro 1, 6. The article says that prisoners are the grave diggers.
