Famed folk artist Jack Savitsky (1910-1999) had lived here with his wife and raised his son here. (See Pictured in My Mind, by the Birmingham Museum of Art, p. 162). He had spent most of his life as a coal miner. His work appears in the Smithsonian and the American Folk Art Museum collections.
