The Hot Club, Philadelphia, World's Greatest Music Venue

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, this little club presented shows by some of the best bands of the era. Examples: the Dead Boys, the Cramps, B-52s, Elvis Costello, Madness, Devo, the Cure, the Autistics, Ultravox! (with John Foxx), Iggy Pop, the Plasmatics, the Bloodless Pharoahs (with Bryan Setzer), the BenWah Torpedos, Lena Lovich, Wreckless Eric, the Talking Heads, Richard Hell, Magazine, Gang of Four, the Mumps and Alex Chilton. Unbelievable!

The article also has a comment talking about how the Bloodless Pharoahs, another house band, would live above the club, and how their side project, the Top Cats, turned into the Stray Cats.

Comments : Brian Setzer talks about the Stray Cats beginnings here in the Rockabilly Rumble article by A.D. Amorosi in the Philadelphia Inquirer, 8/5/14, at pp. C1, C6. (His Bloodless Pharoahs would play the Hot Club, but his side band, the rockabilly Tomcats, would play J.C. Dobbs on South Street. Next, the Stray Cats formed.) (If I remember correctly, The Tomcats would sometimes go by The Top Cats, because I think saw posters for both names. If you have better information, please comment below.)

Comments : You Really Got A Hold On Me; All Day, All The Night; and Rendezvous (at the time an unreleased Bruce Springsteen song). It was a great show. Mrozinski was the opener. ... I was thinking about Bihari recently because I saw an Enquirer interview with her by Michael Glynn discussing her time as Bruce Springsteens girlfriend, and how his song Candys Room is about her.

Comments : Ultravox (John Foxx leading at the time) performed here on 2/25/79, with Trentons The Shades opening. I covered the show as a Drexel (University) Triangle reporter (3/2/79 edition).

Also, there is a posting on the When Punk Came to Town (Philly) Web article page that says that Philadelphia by the band Magazine is about playing the Hot Club. (I was at a Magazine show at the Hot Club.) I dont see reference to the song having anything to do with the Hot Club elsewhere, and the lyrics dont give it away. But I dont doubt the influence.

Comments : //services.library.drexel.edu/static_files/triangle/Drexel-Triangle_1980-04-18.pdf, I think that on Sat., 4/12/80, it was The Cure/Dickies/The Streets at Emerald City, and then on Sat., 4/19/80, it was The Cure/Front Street Runners at the Hot Club.

Comments : //www.setlist.fm/venue/hot-club-philadelphia-pa-usa-43d72747.html. One shows the Fri. 2/23/79 Ultravox (with John Foxx) list, and I recall that great band also playing the following night, and Ultravox (with Midge Ure) playing the Hot Club about a year later, with their cover of Brian Enos Kings Lead Hat as an encore.

Comments : I am sad to report that David Carroll, Hot Club owner, died at the age of 81 on May 26, 2019. There is a good account of his life at http://www.inquirer.com/obituaries/david-carroll-philadelphia-punk-hot-club-bar-noir-starlite-ballroom-20190531.html. The online obituary is longer than the one in today's Phila. Inquirer, at B4.
