Brandy (You're A Fine Girl) based on spinster buried in parking lot?
Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) was a big hit for the Looking Glass in 1972. I was a teen then, and I remember being mesmerized by the tale it told. It truly is a pop classic. There is a legend that the Brandy character was based on a real life story, that of spinster Mary Ellis (1750-1828). Oddly, her grave was eventually surrounded by a Loew's movie theater parking lot. See, for ex., http://weirdnj.com/stories/cemetery-safari/mary-ellis-rt-1-parking-lot-grave/. The song's author and singer, Elliot Lurie, denies the inspiration, saying it is a coincidence. See https://www.newspapers.com/image/253597405/?terms=brandy%2Blurie%2B%22looking%2Bglass%22%2B%22mary%2Bellis%22. There is a lot about Mary Ellis and a possible Brandy connection on the Web. Interesting!
