Herzog Motors used car lot was here in the late fifties until the mid-seventies, when Sam's bought the place. I believe the land it is on once belonged to the convent that was Mother Katherine Drexel's, down the street (now St. Katherine's), and was donated by Mother Katherine for the Cornwells Fire Co., which kept the plot next door for its station. At newspapers.com you can see ads for Herzog, and it is interesting that good running used cars once cost just a few hundred dollars. What I remember is that as a kid we would ride our bikes through the car lot, which only had a shed as an office at the time. On the door of the shed was a sign that said something like, A man with a shotgun sleeps here three nights a week, you guess the nights. We found that really interesting. We wondered why we never saw any signs of that man's presence on any night. I guess he shut the lights off early and went to bed.
