This hoagie shop has made national news because of a the racist name of a menu item, "COVID mac," which was mac and cheese topped with Chinese chili garlic sauce. See, for ex., https://aldianews.com/articles/politics/philly-restaurant-removes-anti-asian-menu-item-damage-remains/62945. It apparently dropped the menu item but refuses to apologize. There are quite a few articles about it on the Web. It is a shame because it looks like the place gets very good reviews for its food.
The owner is in love with New Orleans, https://www.montgomerynews.com/roxreview/news/lennies-hoagies-in-roxborough-has-a-sandwich-for-everyone/article_f3674e2f-0ed5-5110-9e73-686dc8a3fc4f.html, so one wonders whether he truly means to be racist.
The place has also been called Lennie's Home Plate, Lennie's Original South Philly Hoagies, and is sometimes spelled Lenny's, http://www.phillyphoodie.com/2012/05/lennies-hoagies.html.
I wonder why a sandwich of theirs is called the Reverend Al Sharpton - steak, bacon, Cooper sharp cheese and Cajun mayo, toasted. See https://menupages.com/lennies-hoagies/6141-ridge-ave-philadelphia and https://www.montgomerynews.com/roxreview/news/lennies-hoagies-in-roxborough-has-a-sandwich-for-everyone/article_f3674e2f-0ed5-5110-9e73-686dc8a3fc4f.html. Could it be because it contains "sharp" cheese?
