In May 1778, sixteen thousand British troops assembled here to take on a little over two thousand Continental scouts and 47 Oneida warriors, led by the Marquis de Lafayette. The colonial troops managed to escape, which embarrassed the British forces. See the Phila. Inquirer, 9/6/11, at B1 and B2.
