An awful incident here involving Martin Luther King, Jr., being refused service on 6/12/50 may have sparked his civil rights crusade when it was called Mary's Place. Google Martin Luther King and Mary's Place and you will find quite a bit about it, including a movement for a real historical plaque here. Rev. King was living at 753 Walnut St., Camden, at the time (also on Cyber Plaque). The owner was charged but was able to beat the rap because witnesses did not show up in court.
