School of Mary Anna Longstreth was here.

Mary Anna Longstreth (1811-1844) started an innovative Quaker School on this site when she was 18 years old. There is an interesting column on her in the Philadelphia Inquirer, 8/23/15, at p. C2, by the Historical Society of Philadelphia. It says on the Web that she was almost lynched in Rittenhouse Square by anti-abolitionists for being involved with the Underground Railroad, at http://www.redlandsfortnightly.org/papers/ghorm99.htm.
