Springsteen threw Born to Run acetate into motel pool here.

Bruce Springsteen played Keystone Hall at Kutztown State College on July 25 and July 26, 1975. On the 25th, he listened to the acetate from the Born to Run sessions on his portable record player here, and he was so dissatisfied, he threw the acetate into the motel pool. There are accounts on the Web, and in Bruce by Peter Ames Carlin, at pp. 197-198. I found the Campus Inn reference in only one place, but it seems credible. See http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/springsteen-3-magazines-originals-excellent.

Comments : The hotel is not named but Mr. Springsteen describes the incident in his autobiography, Born to Run, at p. 222.

Comments : A couple of days ago I was in Kutztown for Renningers Extravaganza, so I visited the Campus Inn. The pool has been filled in, see the photo posted on this page. I stopped into the office, and asked the affable young man at the counter if he knew anything about the Springsteen acetate incident. He went to a card file box and pulled out a copy of an account from the Web. He said what was in the article was about all the people at the hotel know about it. He said that periodically people do stop in and ask questions similar to mine. He joked that the acetate may be at the bottom of the filled-in pool (and then forcefully stressed that he was joking, and I said, of course). He said that some Springsteen-heads that come in say they heard that after Mr. Springsteen threw the record into the pool, a few of his entourage dove in and pulled it out. That makes sense to me.

Comments : For additional information on this story, see the Mammas Delight Pizza posting on Cyber Plaque. [Also, see Sorellis Jewelry. I dont think the turntable was at the location of Mammas, but rather Sorellis, when it was Trexlers Records. Some accounts say a record player at the motel was used, and others say the entourage went into town and used a turntable from a local record store. I think the latter makes the most sense. - Ed.]
