The late, great poet and novelist, Charles Bukowski, drank at this bar during his days in Philadelphia. The Golden Horn, in the autobiographical movie Barfly, was based on this place. Comments : In Charles Bukowski, Portions From a Wine-Stained Notebook, at p. 26, it says When I was 24 or 5 I ran errands for sandwiches and cleaned venetian blinds and answered question on the classics in a bar in Philly straight East of the Eastern pen, which seems to be a reference to this bar and Eastern State Penitentiary. And on page 92, Also, errand-boy wino on the end bar stool in Philly on Fairmount Avenue, running out for sandwiches for the big boys. A beer or a whiskey for a tip, usually a beer.
