Tippin Inn (on the chitterlin' circuit)

Jim Toomer's Tippin Inn was here. It got its name because of a belief that patrons might be tipsy upon arrival. Great stars played there, including Solomon Burke, Patti LaBelle, B.B. King, Fats Dominio, Ike and Tina Turner, Dinah Washington, Ray Charles, Big Maybelle and Screaming Jay Hawkins. It burned down in 1979. There is a good article about it in the Philadelphia Inquirer, 2/23/12 at C1.  [See http://www.toomerfamily.com/tippin-inn.html - Editor]

Comments : B.B. King died on 5/14/15. In the Philadelphia Inquirer tribute on 5/16/15, beginning on p. 1, it reads, Like fellow African American musicians of the era, he suffered the indignities of touring on the Chitlin Circuit, a label he disliked, in the pre-civil rights South. Tippin Inn, of course, is not the South. I am not an expert on the subject, but I think the chitterlin circuit referred to in the article cited in the main posting above is probably the same as the Chitlin Circuit. If anyone can add to the subject, please comment.

Comments : There is a Wikipedia entry on the Chitlin Circuit. For the past couple of days, Karen Hunter on her Sirius-XM show has been talking about chitterlings, how black slaves took the least desirable parts of the pig that they were given to eat, and with creativity, produced a delicacy.

Comments : Solomon Burke got into a tiff here with Amos Milburn. Burke unknowingly sang "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" while Milburn, who first recorded it, was in the house. The same night a naked woman, Lottie "the Body" Graves, performed with a snake.
